What Is Vedic Meditation and How Does It Work?

Vedic Meditation is a natural, simple technique that allows the mind and body to settle into deep rest and return to balance. It does not require concentration, forcing the mind to be quiet or trying to stop thoughts.

The practice itself is straightforward. You sit comfortably, close your eyes and think a sound silently in the mind. This sound is called a mantra. It is chosen personally for you by a qualified teacher and is used effortlessly during meditation.

How does the mantra work?

As the mantra is thought silently, it naturally becomes fainter and softer. The mind follows it into quieter and quieter layers of awareness. There is no need to hold onto the mantra or make the process happen; its effect is automatic when the technique is correctly.

Eventually, the mantra may become so subtle that it disappears for a moment. The mind settles into a quiet state of inner contentedness while remaining awake. This experience is not produced through effort. It arises naturally as mental activity becomes quieter.

What happens to the body?

When the mind settles, the body follows. The body experiences a profound quality of rest, creating the conditions in which accumulated stress and tiredness can begin to resolve. This deep rest is a central feature of Vedic Meditation.

What are the practical effects?

Vedic Meditation leaves us feeling more energised and balanced. With less accumulated tiredness and stress, we experience clearer thinking, steadier emotions and improved sleep. Rather than withdrawing from everyday life, the practice is designed to help us engage with it more fully.

The essential appeal of Vedic Meditation is its simplicity. It is natural, easy and doable — and after meditation, we come back to activity feeling more like ourselves.

Vedic Meditation is taught in person over four consecutive days at London Meditation Centre and New York Meditation Center.
